Fun in the sun also means protection.
Many different products to help prevent fleas, ticks, and parasites have been formulated over the years to fit your dog or cats lifestyle. So remember to do your research.
The sun is out, and we know you’re all itching to get out there and play. But remember to take precautions so you’re not bringing the itch back home!
Know your products
For example, a camping/hiking dog should have prevention for flea, tick, and heartworm. And a dog that’s strictly indoors maybe not so much.
And cat’s too. Maybe you have a cat that’s mostly indoors….Revolution might be all your cat needs. This product controls the population of fleas, along with preventing heartworm, mites, and some parasites.
But a pet that’s mostly outdoors, with new fleas and ticks hitching a ride on a daily basis….. Maybe you need a more stronger topical to deter them.
Products paired with pets
Dogs that love to swim may need tablet form or water proof topicals, that don’t wash off.
Or a topical that not only prevents fleas, but ticks, biting flies, or even mosquitoes.
Here are a few just to get started…..
Advantage II for cats and dogs.
A monthly topical proven effective for years killing fleas and some parasites.
These products prove effective for the outdoors killing adult fleas within 10 minutes of contact. A waterproof application that also repells ticks, mosquitoes, and biting flies.
Vectra for cats and Vectra 3D for dogs
A monthly topical that repels and kills fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, biting and sand flies, lice and mites (excluding mange mites).
Bravecto has become a very popular tablet form of flea and tick control getting praise for it’s “long lasting” effects, and not needing to worry about it washing off.
Simparica Trio is another oral tablet that covers not only fleas and ticks but heart worm as well.
Flea prevention can come with risks
Though some oral flea controls seem like the best way to go, they are not suitable for every dog, and can come with health risks and guide lines.
Be sure to always read the label. These products should never be given without an exam by your veterinarian.
Dogs that are prone to seizures should never be given an oral flea control, and always take great caution with seniors.
Senior pets may have other medical conditions that you may not yet be aware of, which could make them more vulnerable to side effects.
With pets that suffer from flea allergies, a tablet form might not be the way to go.
The irritation of a flea biting just once could still send the skin into a rage.
Natural flea and tick deterrents
If you’re looking for a natural flea and tick spray for dogs, Vets Best formula is said to be very popular with pet owners, and my favorite Natural Care made with botanical oils.
Both are natural flea and tick treatments that can safely be sprayed directly on your dog, and can also be used to treat upholstery, pet bedding, carpets, and more.
The smell is tolerable, but do be ready for a somewhat minty or pine scent. They both contain essential oils that kill fleas and ticks on contact, but also kill flea eggs as well.
Preventing itch also prevents illness
There are so many Illness and disease transmitted by mosquitos, ticks, and fleas. So remember prevention is the key to keeping your pet and you healthy.
