Choosing the right pet sitter is important,  and a pet lover is an absolute must.

But if things don’t go as planned, are you prepared while you are away?

Emergencies can happen, and something said in vet clinics often during the holidays is……

”the owners out of town.”

Have a plan in place for your pet sitter.

Plan ahead and prepare your pet sitter BEFORE leaving for the holidays or on your much needed vacation.

Pets can become stressed while you are away, so keeping their daily routine the same will help keep appetite and activity normal.

Create a list of things your pet looks forward to each day.

Have your pet sitter follow it or make their needs readily available as best they can.

Doing this will also alert them to any change in health before it becomes too late.

Stay in contact.

Don’t disappear for days without checking in.

Without becoming too available, make yourself available enough to answer any questions.

Leave a contact number in case of emergency, as well as a back up number should you be out of reach.

Create an emergency packet with veterinary contact and access to records.

Have a file set aside for your pet sitter with veterinary contact information as well as a brief history of  your pets health, medication etc.

Include an after hours emergency clinic number, should your regular clinic be closed.

Put aside emergency funds.

Keep in mind that in the event of emergency, just because they go to your veterinarian, does not mean your vet will hold the cost until your return.

Have a plan in place for at least a deposit in case of emergency.

Always  check gate latches and locks before you leave.   This will prevent your pet from escaping an enclosure after a brief walk or while anxiously awaiting the return of your pet sitter.

Taking the extra time to plan ahead gives you peace of mind, allowing for a more relaxing, enjoyable vacation.
