We all want what’s best for our planet. The most earth friendly, but at the same time, user friendly.
Meaning of course strong enough to endure a good clean pick up, right?
Biodegradable vs. Compostable
Biodegradable simply means a product can be decomposed by bacteria or any other living organisms.
BIodegradable products can still be made of chemical plastics.
An improvement over the more conventional plastics, but they too can have a negative impact, if disposed of in the wrong way.
So that is something to consider, especially when paying more for a product.
Biodegradation can take anywhere from a few days, as with foods, to 500 plus years for a plastic bag.
How long something takes to biodegrade will depend on the material make up of the object (ie chemicals etc.) and where it’s been placed for decomposition. Temperature, moisture, light, and oxygen all take part in the speed process of degradation.
It is said that most landfills have very little air, and light making the biodegradation process extremely slow.
And while some objects my reach the end of that process, the fragments may still remain in our landfills or ocean, just invisible to the naked eye.
Compostable products are made from plants.
While these products take less time to break down, they must be kept in the right conditions as well.
Compostable items shouldnt go to landfills but to a composting facility or in the “green bin.”
Will it break down if taken to a landfill? Yes, but lack of oxygen in a landfill will cause these compostable items to build up and create harmful methane as they are breaking down.
So when choosing compostable items, you must be dedicated to the full process of illumination.
Look for certified labels on products claiming to be compostable, if this is the option for you.
Know your products
While biodegradable is not better than compostable it’s still an improvement.
Remember the key takeaways when putting money and time into a product, especially one purchased on a regular basis such as poop bags.
How your dedication to the product proves beneficial.
Some companies will even “give back” to a cause. Whether its to the animals, forests, or clean energy. Know your products.
Popular Earth Rated Poop Bags claim their bags are made from 65% certified post-consumer recycled plastic. Giving a second life to more than 5 million pounds of landfill-bound plastic each year.
For compostable look for certified or reputable brands like The Original Poop Bags or Pet n Pet.
Be a responsible pet owner
*Remember picking up after your pet means disposing of it in the correct manner.
*Please don’t leave bagged poop in parks or any recreational areas. These are not considered areas of composting.
Always respect our parks and trails. Dog feces can spread disease and enter waterways, please dispose of them properly.
