Legalizing marijuana and marketing the health benefits of CBD have caused confusion with some pet parents.
As marijuana has become more popular for its medicinal uses, it is also being used recreationally. Recreational marijuana is very different and if ingested can be dangerous to your pet.
Marijuana with the high (containing THC) can be very deadly and is very different from CBD.
The active compound in marijuana, THC, causes changes in the brain with varying effects on people. Dogs typically have more THC receptors and therefore are much more susceptible to intoxication.
Marijuana leaves and plants alone if ingested can lead to lethargy, loss of bladder control, incoordination, and seizures.
Please do your research, know the difference, and always be cautious with this and ALL medications around pets.
If you think your pet has ingested marijuana, contact your veterinarian immediately.
