Dogs require a good amount of sleep to function, just like people do.
It is said that “a dog will mimic some of the same symptoms of poor sleep in people.”
Those symptoms include…
Stress
Irritability and mood disturbances
Poor memory
And the ability to learn new things.
But above all else, getting enough sleep is important for good health.
Stress can disrupt sleep patterns
Due to stress sometimes we stay awake at night, or when depressed we sleep too much.
Animals can react to such situations in the same way.
There are many reasons a dog may become stressed.
If a dog is feeling fearful from changes in their environment such as loud noises, adjusting to a new home, or just being away from their owner for a long period of time (separation anxiety).
Making a dog feel safe is important for comfort as well as health. Giving them the ability to rest periodically, or after activities.
Know your dogs sleep pattern
Every dog has a different sleep pattern.
A dog can adjust to daily routines.
If patrolling through the night, will sleep during the day.
Or a dog may be active throughout the day and sleep at night.
Some dogs will take naps throughout the day.
A change in sleep patterns can show change in health
Getting older, or unknown health issues along with discomfort, could cause a dogs sleep pattern to be disrupted.
It’s important to find the cause, if you feel there has been a significant change.
Maybe what appears to be “resting” is not.
If getting up has become more difficult, maybe your pet is experiencing some change in health ie; arthritis or other discomfort.
A visit to the veterinarian will answer questions to certain changes.
There are ways to manage changes in health to allow comfort.
Finding a good bed can help with some of these issues.
Knowing if your dog is getting enough sleep, or whether he or she’s getting too much, will always help maintain good health.
