Recent bear attacks in both Yellowstone and Glacier National Park bring the conversation about California regulations on bear spray and safety.
While Yellowstone Park, a popular area located in Wyoming, extending to Montana and Idaho is known for it’s grizzly bears and clearly states, “Carry Bear Spray and know how to use it.” has brought a debate on California banning bear spray.
Many saying this conflicts with other state rules that recommend carrying bear spray… even in areas where black bears exist.
To clear the air, the answer remains no California has not banned bear spray.
In California bear spray is classified as a weapon when misused.
“Unlike regular pepper spray used for personal defense against humans, bear spray has a higher volume and a greater range, making it more effective in confrontations with large animals.”
Making it a dangerous weapon when used improperly.
Though some National Parks will not allow it. Carrying bear spray in parks such as Yosemite, Sequoia, or Kings National Park may come with a hefty fine.
And one may argue that none of these parks where bear spray is banned has a population of brown or grizzly bears.
Of course this statement doesn’t make black bears any less scary, or dangerous, as many wild animals can be.
Be cautious.
Know the area of which you plan to hike,
travel in groups with experienced hikers,
pack the right equipment, and have a plan, especially when hiking in another state.
Choosing an area that accomodates your itinerary might be the way to go.
California does have bears and encourages hikers to carry bear spray in some areas.
Lands managed by U.S. Forest Service
like the Sierra Mountains, and Inyo National Forests, bear spray is recommended, and even encouraged.
Rules may vary in parks, and yes this can become very confusing for out of state hikers used to traveling in grizzly bear country.
Make a habit of checking the rules and guidelines of each park as you visit….And know that rules can always change.
Black bear attacks are said to be rare in California, but it’s always best to be prepared.
There are ways to deter bears, as well as other wildlife threats such as mountain lions.
Remember you are in their territory, always be prepared.
Most important- ALWAYS keep food put away and dogs on leash.
